Introduction to Frontpage
(creating and publishing WEB-pages)

Webdesign:

Two basic principles:
- Hierarchical structure of all pages
- Three partite (web-) page structure: header, body, footer
  - Header: Caption, Navigation
  - Body: main text
  - Footer: copyright, Institution/Autor(e-mail), URL (recommended)

Frontpage

Basics: Frontpage creates a local WEB und publishes this WEB to a public directory on an internet server

Difference between Frontpage Explorer and Frontpage Editor: Explorer administrates the local web, Editor allows to create and process single WEB-pages.
Frontpage Explorer works in part similar to the Windows-Explorer (directory listing with most of the Windows-Explorer features). Above that it shows the links between the singe Web-pages (Navigation) and offers features to work simultaneously on all pages of a local WEB.
All pages, created with Frontpage Editor will be published to a predefined WEB-Site. Files, that shall not be published, but left within the local WEB must be placed in the private folder, whose pages can not be found by Internet user.

Important Features of Frontpage Explorer:
- Organizing the file system
- Add, Remove files, drag/ drop files
- Rename file(s), Rename local web(s),
- Spell checking the entire local web,
- Find, Replace Function for all pages in the local web
- Print navigation view
- Verify hyperlinks

Creating a homepage with Frontpage-Editor:
- Basic structure: page with shared borders (top, left of dotted line) and body for the text.
  - Shared borders: Information (text,links etc.) in the shared borders will be displayed in all pages of the local WEB.
    - Applications for top border: Banner, appearing on all pages. Links to (local WEB-) pages of the same level or higher.
    - Applications for left border: links to lower level or „unrelated" links
    - Applications for bottom border: copyright, institution/ author, date , the URL can’t be integrated!
    - Navigation buttons in the basic layout of a new page depend on the navigation picture in Frontpage Explorer
    - Borders are adjustable: menu: tools – shared borders
  - Body: Creating a text in Frontpage Editor has much to do with word processing and has the same basic operations (from word wrap, over copy text to font/ paragraph formatting and (page-) spell checking).
- Special feature for (WEB-) text processing:
  - creating a list with sub-categories (so called nested items), variants:
    - bulleted or numbered lists,
    - ordered list
    - graphical bullets
  - creating tables:
    - inserting text
    - adding rows/ columns
    - adding cells with drawing tools
    - merging cells with eraser
    - changing cells widths/ heights
    - adding caption
    - aligning inserted text
    - changing table background
    - cell coloring
    - border coloring
    - converting text to table
  - Integrating Hyperlinks for text or images:
    - Links to the (World Wide) Web
    - Links inside one’s own web
    - Links inside a page
    - E-Mail-Links
  - Working with graphics:
    - inserting graphics
    - editing graphics
    - using low resolution images
    - alternate text
    - thumbnails
- Applying Themes to the local WEB (from explorer for all pages or editor: format – themes for a single page or all pages)
- Transition effects (only applicabel with IE4)
- Preview a page in Frontpage Editor or in Internet browser
- Printing pages and print preview

- Hover-buttons (graphics, that change their apearance, when you place the mouse pointer over them)
- Banner Ads
- Marquee
- Search form
- Hi Counter
- Creating Image maps
Forms:
- Create a standard form
- Adding form elements
Frames: (Pages are recommended to be without themes and shared borders)
- Create a frame
- making changes to the frame
- resizing a frame
- controlling scrollbars/ borders
- adding/ deleting frames
